2.2MATERIALS

Catalog description for indicated number constitutes requirements, unless otherwise specified.

B.Wood Species:

01All wood used in the construction of furniture and cabinets shall be northern grown red oak and shall be selected form seasoned, kiln-dried materials free from structural imperfections.The moisture content at time of fabrication shall range from 5% to 7%.All woods shall be selected for uniformity of grain and color.Wood used for internal parts shall be selected a structurally sound.

02All plywood used shall be of quality as specified by the American Plywood Association.All facing materials shall be no less than 1/28” thickness after sanding.Face veneers (i.e. veneers facing an exterior surface) shall be select, plain sliced, slip matched, to selected species.

C.Plastic Laminates:

01All high pressure plastic laminate shall meet ANSI/NEMA

LD3-1991 specifications.Horizontal top surfaces are laminated with .050” thick laminate and a .030” thick phenolic backer sheet is applied on the reverse side of all horizontal surfaces.Vertical surfaces are laminated with a .030” thick laminate on each side.

D.Wood Finishes:

01In the manufacturing process after parts are cut and ready to finish, all solid oak panels and shelves are dipped in Nelsonite 15B02 wood stabilizer.Prior to assembly, parts pass through a 5 head wide belt sander which has 100, 120, 150, 180, and 220 grit sand paper.Parts are then inspected, filled and hand sanded as necessary until thoroughly cleaned.

After sanding, the parts are roll coated with 100 percent solid U.V. stain, wiped, U.V. oven cured and then pass through a deburring station.

Then parts are roll coated with a 100 percent solid U.V. sealer, U.V. oven cured, then passed through a final deburring station.

Next parts are roll coated with a final 100 percent U.V. clear top coat and then U.V. oven cured.

All sealers and finishes must be U.V. and applied by a flat line roll coat system to insure a uniform and environmentally safe finish.

2.3CONSTRUCTION

A.Table:

01Table tops shall be 1-1/4” thick consisting of a 1-13/16” 7-ply hardwood lumberwith plastic laminate and backer sheet.Center ply of the lumber core shall consist ½” thick edge-glued hardwood lumber strips of random widths with two outer cross banded veneers of 3/32” hardwood.To either side of this, a layer of 1/8” long grain hardwood and a layer of 1/8” short grain hardwood are added.The 1-3/16” core then receives a layer of .050” high pressure plastic laminate and a layer of .030” phenolic backer.Table tops with internal edge bands have the edge bands applied before the application of plastic and backer.Tops shall have standard edge banded with 3/4” x 1-1/4” external bullnose solid oak edge bands which are applied after the application of backer and laminate, unless otherwise specified in the equipment schedule.

Legs shall be constructed of two pieces of two pieces of solid oak, glued and machined to a minimum of 2-3/8” square.Legs shall be attached to the top by means of a 5” x 5” x 5/16” metal-flanged plate.The mounting plate to be attached to the legs by means of 5/16” x ¾” machine bolts into 5/8” barrel nuts inserted into the leg.The plate will in turn attach to the table top by means of 5/16” x 1” machine bolts into metal inserts in the table top.Legs shall be equipped with a 1-3/4” diameter adjustable glide screwed into an

insert and used for leveling and height adjustment.Tables shall have an apron trim of 1-1/8” x 2-1/8” solid oak and shall fit between the legs to form a reveal design.The apron shall be attached to the table from the underside with 1-1/4” x #10 wood screws.A 14 gauge “V” shaped metal keel shall be attached to the underside on all tables 60” and longer.

B.Shelving:

01All vertical uprights of library shelving shall be a minimum of 1” thick, kiln

dried solid oak, glued up in strips no less than 1-1/2" and no more than 4", andfree of all imperfections.Veneered plywood of any type and / or uprights of less than 1” thickness will not be acceptable.

The 2" canopy cornice shall be constructed of an oak plywood top with solid oak facia strips which are machine applied to front and back edges.Bolting cleats are attached by means of wood screws and glued construction. 

Continuous top shelving shall have a 2" deep dovetailed top frame provided with countersunk holes for screwing down a continuous top made of solid core with standard (Statesman) internal straight solid oakedge bands or as specified in the equipment list.Bases shall be of solid hardwood 3-1/2" in height with dovetail joints.

Shelving units shall be standard with back panels on single faced shelving and divider panels on double faced units.Backs shall be 1/4" thick oak plywood and finished on one side for single faced units and both sides for double faced units.Backs shall be recessed in a dado on all sides.End panels shall be joined to cornice and base by means of metal ferrules embedded in the end panels with 5/16" hex head bolts passing through the cleats on the cornice and the sides of the base and engaging the ferrules.Filler and corner units shall be supplied as needed to complete shelving runs as shown on the plan. 

Shelves shall be a minimum of 3/4" thick, edge glued, solid oak strips no less than 1-1/2" wide nor more than 4" wide.The underside of all shelves shall be neatly routed to receive the metal supporting pins. Adjustment of shelves shall be of pin hole style construction with adjustments at 1-1/4" increments, which provides for a cleaner less conspicuous installation. 

Adder shelving units shall be joined by means of 5/16" hex head bolts passing through both bases and the intermediate upright,both cleats on the cornices and the intermediate upright, and then secured with washers and nuts.

All shelving 60" high and under can have a continuous style top with high pressure plastic laminate surface.Continuous tops when used, shall have the standard edge banded with 3/4” x 1-1/4” external bullnose solid oak edge bands which are applied after the application of backer and laminate.All shelving 72” and higher will have a 2” wood veneer canopy top to match shelving unit..

C.Seating:

01CHAIRS - MANUFACTURED BY OTHERS- FINISHED TOMATCH LIBRARY FURNITURE:

Library Chairs:Chairs to be of oak wood construction stained to match library furniture.All Joints are to be multiple doweled and frames shall be reinforced with heavy wood corner blocks, glued and screwed in place.Back posts, front posts, side rails and sled rails shall be made of 5/4" oak finished to 1-1/16" thickness and 2" width.Front rails, back rails andcross stretchers shall be 4/4" oak finished to 13/16" thickness and 1-1/2" width.Side assembly shall be flush sanded on both sides and all edges shall be eased.Both top corners of the back posts and the top front corner of the front posts shall be shaped to a 3/8" radius. The side posts shall be shaped to the contour of the back posts and the top and bottom rails shall be steam bent to a 24" radius.

Seat and back shall be made of an assembled rail construction with each joint containing two 3/8" x 2" spiral groove dowels and shall be removable.Seat and back can be upholstered.

Frame shall be of leg or sled base type of 5/4" solid oak finished to 1-1/16" thickness x 2-1/4" width and shall be double doweled to the bottom of the front and back posts using 3/8" x 2" spiral groove dowels.

Librarian's Chair:Construction and upholstery to be the same as Library Chairs.Base shall be solid oak with carpet casters and shall be adjustable.

Charging Desk Stool:Construction and upholstery to be the same as Library Chairs.Base shall be solid oak with carpet casters and shall be adjustable.

Reading Area Furniture:Reading area lounge furniture shall be of oak wood construction stained to match library furniture.back posts, front posts, arms and sled rails shall be of 8/4” solid oak finished to 1-3/4” thick x 3” wide.Side rails shall be of 8/4” solid oak finished to 1-3/4” thick x 4-1/8” wide.Back seat rail shall be of 5/4” solid oak finished to 1” thick x 4” wide and be triple doweled to the side rails using 7/16” x 2” spiral groove dowels.Arms, side rails, and sled rails shall be triple doweled to the front and back posts using 7/16” x 2” spiral groove dowels.Seat support (2 required) shall be of 4/4” solid oak finished to 7/8” thick x 2-1/4” wide and shall be double doweled to the front and back rails using 7/16” x 2” dowels.Back support rail shall be of 5/4 solid oak finished to 1-1/16”thick x 3-1/8”wide.The front shall be beveled to accept the back.The rail shall be triple doweled between the arms using 7/16” x 2”spiral groove dowels.An additional 1” x 1-1/4” widerail shall be attached to the underside of the rail by glue ad nine 12 x 1-3/4” tapping screws to increase support.Side assembly shall be flush sanded on both sides and each joint.The top of the arm shall be shaped to a 7” radius.All four corners shall be shaped to a 1” radius.Front and back corner blocks shall further reinforce the frame and shall be glued and screwed into place using polyvinyl alcohol ester blend with polyvinyl acetate glue, four 10 x 1-1/4” twinfast screws, and two 7 x 70mm confirmat screws.

Upholstered back shall be made of an assembled rail construction with each joint containing two 7/16” x 2” spiral groove dowels.The seat shall be equipped with a flex-o-later unit, seven helicals, an insulator and 5” thick minimum 1.8 PCF density polyurethane cushion wrapped with 3/4” Dacron.Upholstery shall be pre-sewn-sewn and triple stitched.Grade 100 is standard.

D. Circulation Desks

CIRCULATION DESK AND COMPONENTS - 4400 Series:

Circulation Desks shall be designed using a modular concept with a continuous top.Modules shall be available in 32", 36", 39", or 42" high units as specified on equipment list.Each module shall be 36" wide x 26 3/4" deep with a 30" deep continuous top.A pair of finished end panels are required at the end of each circulation desk configuration.

Facing materials shall be 3/4" thick,7-plyplywood with oak veneer facing and solid oak edges.Themodules shall be as shown in the design specifications.All components shall be manufactured using oak plywood with matching solid oak framing.All exterior materials used shall be 3/4" thick, 7-ply oak plywood with face veneers 1/28" thick, matched for color and grain uniformity and with a solid oak edge.

The top shall be of a continuous designfabricated in as large of sections as possible and shall be joined together by a draw bolt method.The top shall be 1-1/4" thick with a surface of .050" thick high pressure plastic laminate over a lumber core with .030" thick phenolic backer sheet on the underside.Tops shall have standard (Celebrity) 3/4” x 1-1/4" external bullnose solid oak edge bands which are applied before the application of backer and laminate, or as specified in the equipment schedule.

Drawer fronts shall be made of 3/4" thick solid red oak lumber, edge glued forming a continuous solid wood drawer front.Drawer sides and parts shall be 1/2" thick solid oak with dovetail joints and a 1/4" bottom recessed on all four sides.Drawer fronts shall be removable.Drawers shall be equipped with side-mounted, full-extension drawer slides as manufactured by Accuride C3832-A 100# capacity.Drawer pulls shall be wire pulls furnished in a brass matt finish.

Doors, end panels, and shelves shall be 3/4” thick 7-ply plywood with an oak face veneer of 1/28” thick, matched for color and grain with a solid oak edge to match.Doors shall be hung with two commercial grade, European, concealed, self closing hinges (91A6600) and shall be flush insert style.Shelves shall adjust by means of pin holes.KV strips shall not be acceptable.

All framing materials shall be of kiln dried oak selected for structural soundness and shall be a minimum of 3/4" thick.

Finished End Panel:Finished end panels are required at each end unit of a circulation desk and shall be of 3/4” thick oak plywood with solid oak edge banding.

4445 - Depressible Book Truck:The depressible book truck shall be constructed of 3/4" thick oak plywood sides and bottom with matching oak edge banding.The truck shall be provided with four 3" diameter swivel casters.Unit shall have a floating shelf surface which shall be covered in a neutral colored high pressure plastic laminate and shall be supported by a spring action depressing mechanism that lowers with the weight of the books.Rubber bumpers may be ordered as an option.

Circulation Desk – 6400 Series

Modular components shall be of the design and description outlined in the equipment schedule.Components have individual captured tops to allow ease of rearrangement if so desired with minimal effort.

All components shall be constructed of ¾” thick, 7=ply veneer core hardwood plywood with oak veneer facing 1/28” thick and solid oak edge bands.Individual tops shall be lumber core surfaced with .050” thick high pressure laminate with a .030” thick backing sheet on the underside.All exposed edges of the top shall be banded with the solid oak edge style specified for the project.The tops shall be captured within 29” deep end panels.Each cabinet shall be separated by a ¼” reveal strip.A pair of finished end panels shall complete the entire assembly.

All interior framing material used in the construction of the units shall be of kiln-dried hardwood selected for structural soundness and shall be a minimum of ¾” thick.

Drawer fronts on all units will made of ¾” thick northern solid oak edge glued to form a continuous solid wood drawer front for lasting strength and durability.Drawer sides and parts will be ½” solid hardwood with dovetail joints and ¼” bottom recessed on all four sides.Drawers shall be equipped with side mounted, full extension drawer slides.Drawer pulls are provided in bronze or aluminum finish.

All doors and end panels shall be of ¾” thick seven-ply oak plywood with oak veneer facing 1/28” thick and banded all exposed edges with solid oak.Doors will be hung with two commercial grade, concealed, self-closing hinges.

Units with shelves will be drilled with pin holes to provide support for the shelves.

CIRCULATION DESK – 7400 SERIES

The 7400 Series circulation desks and components are designed using a freestanding modular concept with each unit having an individual captured top.This allows the user the option of rearranging units depending on change of space or equipment requirements.The units are designed for every purpose, form the simple open unit to the most sophisticated computer unit.Each unit is engineered for user efficiency and convenience.

All exterior fronts are made of ¾” thick, seven-ply oak plywood with rift cut face veneers 1/28” thick matched for color and grade uniformity.Individual tops shall be lumber core surfaced with .050” thick high pressure laminate with a .030” thick backing sheet on the underside.All exposed edges of the top shall be banded with the solid oak edge style specified for the project.The tops shall be captured within 29” deep 1” thick finished end panels.

All interior framing material used in the construction of the units shall be of kiln-dried hardwood selected for structural soundness and shall be a minimum of ¾” thick.

E.Technical Furniture

Atlas Stand:Legs and apron construction to be the same as Tables.Cabinet ends and front shall be 3/4" 7-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Case shall house shelves constructed of3/4" oak plywood with solid oak retainer strip on front edge.Shelves to slide on full extension slides.Top shall be 1-1/4" thick constructed of 1-1/8" solid core, .050" plastic laminate, .030" phenolic backer, and solid oak edge bands.Edge bands shall be the same as on the tables for the project. Legs are attached with 4 - 14 ga. steel vertical corner leg brackets.The leg base unit is permanently attached to the atlas cabinet body.The apron rail which is mounted between the legs shall be constructed of 3/4" x 3-1/2" solid oak and attached to the top with countersunk screws.

Dictionary Stand:Legs and apron construction to be the same as Tables.Cabinets ends and front shall be 3/4" 7-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Case shall house one adjustable shelf constructed of3/4" oak plywood. Top shall be 1-1/4" thick constructed of 1-1/8" solid core, .050" plastic laminate, .030" phenolic backer, and solid oak edge bands.Edge bands shall be the same as on the tables for the project.Legs are attached with 4 - 14 ga. steel vertical corner leg brackets.The leg base unit is permanently attached to the body of the unit.The apron rail which is mounted between the legsshall be constructed of 3/4" x 3-1/2" solid oak and attached to the top with countersunk screws.

Book Cart and Easel:Cabinet constructed of 3/4” oak plywood with solid oak edge bands with a 1-1/4” HPL top with solid oak full rounded bullnose edgeband.4 - 3” casters.Shelves are removable and can be positioned horizontally and vertically.

Secretarial and/or Executive Desk:Desk end panels shall be constructed with 1” 9-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Modesty (front panel) shall be constructed of 3/4” 7 ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Framing materials shall be 3/4” solid hardwood.Desks may have various arrangements of drawer pedestals, lap drawers and returns as noted by the equipment schedule. 

Top shall be 1-1/4” thick consisting of 1-1/8” lumber core, .050” plastic laminate, .030” phenolic

backer, and 3/4” solid oak edge bands.Edge bands shall be 3/4” x 1-1/4” internal solid oak edge bands which are applied before the application of backer and laminate, unless otherwise specified on the equipment schedule.

Drawer fronts shall be made of 3/4” thick northern oak, edge glued forming a continuous solid wood drawer front which is applied to a completed drawer box and is removable.Drawer sides and parts shall be 1/2” thick solid oak with dovetail joints and a 1/4” bottom recessed on all four sides.Drawers shall be equipped with side mounted full extension Accuride C3832 drawer slides.Drawer pulls shall be in a bronze finish Amerock BP 30535-AE.

Portable Book Truck:End panels bottom, and shelves are constructed of 3/4” solid oak.Shelves re glued, screwed and tenoned into the end panels.Portable book trucks may be ordered in single face or double face units with flat shelves or sloped shelves.Bottom shelf will be flat. Units shall be equipped with 5” casters, 2 swivel , 2 fixed.

Card Catalog:Sides of the drawer cabinet shall be 3/4” thick, 7-ply oak plywood with solid oak edge bands.Framing shall be solid oak.

The unit is supported with four vertical 2-3/8” solid red oak legs which are a permanent portion of the unit base frame and are attached with 14 gauge steel vertical corner leg brace (EA7) in construction with its perimeter style apron rail design.Each leg is attached by means of two 5/16” x 18” x 3”long hanger bolts per leg for frame corner rigidity.Top of unit shall be 1-1/4” thick and constructed from solid core with .050” high pressure laminate top surface and .030z’ phenolic backer.Edge bands on top shall match those of tables used on the project.

Drawer fronts shall be 3/4” thick solid oak and finished to match.Drawer fronts shall have two compartment bronze finish pulls fastened to the drawer with concealed screws.Card trays are 5-5/8”w x 16”d x 2”h and are constructed of beige colored high density ABS plastic.Each tray shall be equipped with and adjustable, positive locking metal follower operating in a plastic channel.A round metal rod shall be in each tray to secure the cards in the tray.Rods shall have a metal knob and shall engage in a concealed spring loaded latch to permit the removal or replacement of the cards.Drawers shall slide on solid hardwood slides.

Magazine Rack:Legs and apron construction to be the same as tables.Cabinet sides and back to be 3/4” 7-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.The cabinet has five vertical staggered pockets which are constructed of 1/2” solid oak hardwood and has a rear storage bin at the base of the vertical pockets.The unit is supported with four legs and apron frame attached to the cabinet by means of EA6 metal corner brackets and 5/16” lag screws into the legs.Standard width is 36” 

Paperback Display:Oak frames with rotating towers.Each 5 tier tower holds approximately 150 paperback books.Frames are constructed of 1-3/4” thick square solid oak members 62”H x 25”W with an oak cross member 12” from the bottom to give a clearance of 49” for the placement of the molded plastic display tower which rotates on a steel rod.Each frame has 2 adjustable glides for leveling.Towers are available in 5 tier or tier.

Basic unit consists of 2 frames - 2 towers.Additional frames and towers can be added to formsquare design (4 towers - quad) or any number of zig-zag designs.

Podium:Full panel design constructed of 3/4” 7-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Standard size is 27”W x 4”H x 21” D.Sloped top 1-1/4” thick is recessed 4” between panels for privacy, has plastic laminate surface and solid oak paper stop.Rear of top is flat to provide drink ledge.there are three oak banded plywood shelves - a fixed shelf mounted by oak cleats below the top, a enter adjustable shelf, and a bottom fixed shelf also mounted by oak cleats.Mobile units have 2 - 3” fixed casters and 2 - 3” swivel casters with brakes mounted to the bottom fixed shelf.

F.CARRELS, COMPUTER STATIONS, PUBLIC ACCESS STATIONS:

Table Style Carrels -- Computer/Printer Tables:Top, legs, and apron shall be the same construction as tables.Rack shall be constructed of 3/4” 7-ply oak veneer plywood with solid oak edge bands.Rack end panels, divider panels, and back shall be joined with dado joints.Rack shall be securely mounted from the underside of the table.Accessories will be supplied only as ordered.

Panel Post Carrels:Carrels are available as either double face or single face units and in starter/adder configurations.Standard single face size is 36”w x 48”h x 30”d, double face size is 36”w x 48”h x 48”d.Other sizes are available upon request or as noted on bid sheets.

The carrel work surface shall be a nominal thickness of 1-1/4” consisting of lumber core with top and bottom hardwood veneer cross banding, .050” high pressure plastic laminate top surface and .030” phenolic backer.Tops shall be edge banded with 3/4” x 1-1/4” external bullnose solid oak edge bands which are applied after the application of backer and laminate.

The work surface is attached to side and back panels with 6” x 1-1/4” x 1-1/4” metal brackets which are screwed into the underside of the top surface and bolted into the end panels.Brackets are attached to the back and side panels with metal bolts threaded into metal inserts embedded in the plywood panels.Brackets are then screwed into the underside of the top.

Units ordered with an adjustable work surface shall have threaded metal inserts pre-installed in the back and end panels.Work surface may be unbolted and rebolted at different heights by using these inserts.

Side and back panels are constructed of 3/4” 7-ply veneer core plain slice oak plywood with solid oak edge bands.Side panels are attached to the posts with concealed metal to metal fasteners.Posts shall be constructed of two pieces of solid red oak glued and machined to 1-3/4” square with vertical edges eased and smoothed.Each post shall receive a chrome plated, 1-1/2” diameter adjustable glide screwed into an insert and used for height adjustment.

Reference and paper shelves, if ordered, shall be 10” deep and constructed of 3/4” 7-ply oak veneer plywood with a 2” solid oak facia.The reference shelf is located 2-1/4” below top of back panel.The paper shelf is placed 12” below the work surface.Reference and paper shelves are attached with 4 - 6” x 1-1/4” x 1-1/4” metal brackets which are bolted with metal to metal fasteners to side and back panels and screwed to the underside of the shelf.

Full Panel Computer Carrels:Carrels are available as either double face or single face units and in starter/adder configurations.Standard single face size is 36”w x 48”h x 30”d, double face size is 36’w x 48’h x 48”d.Other sizes are available upon request or as noted on bid sheets.

The carrel work surface shall be a nominal thickness of 1-1/4” consisting of lumber core with top and bottom hardwood veneer cross banding, .050”Tops shall be edge banded with 3/4” x 1-1/4” external bullnose solid oak edge bands which are applied after the application of backer and laminate.The work surface is attached to side and back panels with 6” x 1-1/4” x 1-1/4” metal brackets which are screwed into the underside of the top surface and bolted into the end panels.Brackets are attached to the back and side panels with metal bolts threaded into metal inserts embedded in the plywoodpanels.Brackets are then screwed into the underside of the top.

Units ordered with an adjustable work surface shall have threaded metal inserts pre-installed in the back and end panels.Work surface may be unbolted and re-bolted at different heights by using these inserts.

Side and back panels are constructed of 3/4” 7-ply veneer core oak plywood with solid oak edge bands.Side panels are attached to the back panel with concealed metal to metal fasteners.The bottom of the side panels shall be equipped with 1” adjustable glides.

Reference and paper shelves, if ordered, shall be 10” deep and constructed of 3/4” 7-ply oak veneer plywood with a 2” solid oak facia.The reference shelf is located 2-1/4” below top of back panel.The paper shelf is placed 12” below the work surface.Reference and paper shelves are attached with 4 6” x 1-1/4” x 1-1/4” metal brackets which are bolted with metal to metal fasteners to side and back panels and screwed to the underside of the shelf.Depth of reference and paper shelf may vary according to description on equipment list. 

PART 3 – EXECUTION

1.1INSTALLATION

A.Install equipment under factory supervision.Provide all bolts, blocking,
